Northwest Kentucky at Heart of Special Session
June 11th, 2009
A special session of the Kentucky General Assembly will begin this Monday, 15 June. The Governor has placed four items on the agenda:
- Budget—Kentucky, like most other states, is facing a projected deficit for FY 09–10 which begins 1 July;
- Expanded Gaming—the Governor is proposing to allow Video Lottery Terminals (similar to slots) to be placed at Kentucky Horse Tracks to generate revenue for the tracks (Ellis Park in Henderson) and the state;
- Infrastructure—this proposal would create opportunities for local and private financing options of mega transportation projects such as the I-69 bridge at Henderson;
- Economic Development Incentives—this proposal would update and restructure Kentucky’s broad economic development incentives while also creating new incentives for existing industry, technology, small business, and NASCAR.
It is doubtful any region of the Commonwealth will follow these issues more closely, or has more potentially at stake, than Northwest Kentucky. I will blog more about the incentives legislation and will provide updates as the session progresses.
