Supplier Diversity Workshop

May 16, 2012 | 5 PM – 6:30 PM | Fine Arts Center–Stagg Room

Henderson Community College will be hosting an event for area diverse business owners to learn more about opportunities for doing business with the college, 5-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16 in the Stagg Room of the Fine Arts Center on the HCC campus. The event is in support of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System’s (KCTCS) Supplier Diversity Initiative.

The overall objective of the Supplier Diversity Initiative is to ensure KCTCS and HCC meet the 2010-2016 Strategic Plan goal to “reflect the diversity of the students and employees of our 16 colleges and the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”

One way the Business Services area of KCTCS is addressing this goal is to try to increase the number of diverse suppliers with whom we do business. This meeting is an opportunity for us to identify and meet more diverse suppliers and to make sure everyone is aware of the potential for the colleges of KCTCS as customers. Local suppliers may be able to provide goods and services to HCC as well as to any of the other fifteen community and technical colleges located throughout Kentucky.

Diverse suppliers include businesses owned by ethnic minorities, women, veterans or individuals with disabilities. Once a diverse business is registered with the Initiative they will be notified by phone and e-mail when a matching opportunity occurs with HCC or any of KCTCS’s 16 colleges. Newsletters and other communications will also keep them updated on future opportunities, Initiative related events and more.

The agenda for May’s event includes an overview of how the Initiative works, a demonstration of the online registration process, and an open question and answer session. A brief tour of the college campus will follow for interested attendees. Purchasing agents for the college will be present. Light snacks will be provided.

NWKF and GOEDC Host Joint Luncheon in Atlanta

NWKF and our partners at the Greater Owensboro EDC hosted a joint luncheon today in Atlanta for site selection consultants. More than 30 consultants attended the event and learned more about the advantages to doing business in this region. As a direct result of this luncheon, several consultants have requested follow up to discuss projects and opportunities.

NWKF appreciates the partnership with Owensboro as we promote the greater Northwest Kentucky region and with the Cabinet for Economic Development which also participated in today’s event.

NWKF Team Works Together, Runs Together

Wellness is important aspect to productive, healthy and happy workplaces. At NWKF, we take that seriously. For several years NWKF has had a wellness program that encouraged exercise. On St. Patrick’s Day, the NWKF team (along with several family members and friends) ran in the St Patrick’s Day 5K. It was a great race, in other words, everyone finished!

January Unemployment Report Shows NW KY Leading the Way

Northwest Kentucky had 3 counties among the 7 lowest unemployment rates in the most recent report. Webster County reported at 7.2% with Union County at 7.8% and Henderson at 7.9%. The counties ranked 2nd, 6th and 7th in the state for lowest rates.

This report continues a trend reflecting positive job growth in the region. For the complete Labor Market Area (12 counties in KY, IN, and IL) the unemployment rate is below 8%, well below the Kentucky, Indiana, and national rates.

4 Star Industrial Park approved for Foreign Trade Zone

4 Star Industrial Park approved for Foreign Trade Zone

Henderson, KY – The entire 4 Star Industrial Park located on the Henderson – Webster County line in Kentucky has now been approved as a Foreign Trade Zone. The Foreign Trade Zone will include nearly 800 acres in the park adjacent to I-69 with rail access.

A foreign-trade zone (FTZ) in the United States is a geographical area where commercial merchandise, both domestic and foreign receives the same Customs treatment it would if it were outside the commerce of the United States. This tariff and tax relief is designed to lower the costs of U.S. based operations engaged in international trade and thereby create and retain the employment and capital investment opportunities that result from those operations. These special geographic areas – Foreign-Trade Zones – are established “in or adjacent to” U.S. Ports of Entry and are under the supervision of the U.S. Customs & Border Protection under the U.S. Homeland Security.

“This is exciting news for our Region. We feel this is another way that differentiates 4 Star from other industrial parks. It is exciting to announce this at a time when we are seeing an increase in activity in our Region.” said Doug Bell, 4 Star Industrial Park Board Chairman.

NW KY Training Consortium to Sponsor Arc Flash Safety Class

An Arc Flash Safety Training Class will be held on February 28, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Sullivan Technology Center, Room 310, Henderson Community College.

The Northwest Kentucky Training Consortium is sponsoring this class as a member-benefit. Please contact us if you would like more information on the Northwest Kentucky Training Consortium. Given this sponsorship, cost per person is only $60 with a 30 student maximum.

Arc Flash Safety Training, NFPA 70E – 8-Hour is offered to students on an annual basis. This course qualifies as the training needed to comply with NFPA 70E and OSHA 29CFR1910 regulatory purposes. This course emphasizes electrical safety, broadly describes various NFPA 70E Codes and Standards, and provides an overview of arc flash boundaries and required personal protective equipment.

Competencies: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
• recognize the nature of electrical hazards in the workplace.
• understand the differences between shock and arc flash hazards.
• reference and review specific codes and standards of NFPA 70E.
• understand the designation of shock and arc flash boundaries.
• recognize needed personal protective equipment according to hazard or risk.
• understand the criteria of how to work on or near live parts.

I-69 Day in Washington

NWKF will be participating in the I-69 Day events in Washington at the end of February. Sponsored by Northwest Kentucky’s Congressman, Ed Whitfield, the day will focus attention on this important transportation project.

Once completed, Northwest Kentucky will lie at the heart of this corridor stretching from the Canadian border in Michigan to the Mexican border in Texas.

There is tremendous progress being made on I-69 with the Evansville to Bloomington, IN, portion under construction and 55 miles of existing roadway now bearing the shield in KY.
