Jamie Vollmer ran a renowned ice cream company and knew three things about public education when he became active in the field in the 1980s. Two of them were wrong.
1. “The system is flawed. We’re not getting the kind of workers we need.”
2. School personnel “are the problem,” which prompted nervous laughter from his audience of mostly educators in the Henderson Fine Arts Center at the Rally 4 Education conference Saturday. “C’mon. Everybody knows your nests are feathered. You don’t have to work hard. You’re not exposed to the competitive forces of the marketplace. Nothing’s pushing you to improve. You are the problem.”
3. “If we would just run it like a business everything would be OK.”
All three are held as truisms in the business world, he said.

Local educators earned praise Saturday from a nationally known speaker and author at the second annual Rally 4 Education gathering at Henderson Community College.
“You’re doing really good things, things I haven’t heard of anywhere else,” said Jamie Vollmer, author of “Schools Cannot Do It Alone.”
Many of the issues raised during reports by local educators and community members dove-tailed almost perfectly with Vollmer’s comments later, such as Dawn Kelsey’s report on fostering parental involvement.

Plugged-In’s Energy Week got off to a great start today with two very successful events.
A BioEnergy Symposium sponsored by Plugged In and the Kentucky Energy Cabinet featured a number of speakers focused on the opportunities for BioEnergy in Kentucky, especially in Northwest Kentucky.

Jamie Vollmer will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Rally 4 Education on 6 November at the Henderson Fine Arts Center. Vollmer is an acclaimed speaker and author and his book, Schools Cannot Do It Alone, is praised by educators, business leaders, elected officials and parents as a how-to manual to get the conversation started. UK Coach John Calipari is the featured speaker celebrating Henderson Community College’s 50th anniversary which will benefit the Colonels 2 College scholarship program.
The event is scheduled for 17 September 2010 at HCC. All of the proceeds will support scholarships to Henderson Community College for Henderson County High School graduates who sign up as freshmen and maintain good standing with the program. The first class to benefit is the class of 2013.
The event will begin with a “Close-Up” reception with Coach Calipari at 6 pm for premium ticket holders. At 7:30, Coach Cal will speak at the Fine Arts Center McCormick Performance Hall.
